According to the Seattle Times' Danny O'Neill, 11-year veteran Patrick Kerney has decided to retire from the NFL.

Our View:Kerney spent the first eight years of his playing days in Atlanta before coming to Seattle in 2007. He will finish his stellar NFL career with 82.5 sacks and 476 tackles.

NFL.com reports that Patrick Kerney has indicated that he will play at least one more season and hold off on retirement.

Our View:The question is: do the Seahawks want Kerney? They likely do, but not at the $5.6 million price tag that he is owed for 2010. He will need to either take a pay cut or restructure his contract. Expect a resolution when everyone involved finds out what direction new head coach Pete Carroll wants to go in.

While a formal announcement has yet to be made, Patrick Kerney has apparently opted to retire, according to Pro Football Talk.

Our View:Kerney reportedly threw a retirement party last week, yet the media failed to get word of his retirement until now. Kerney was set to undergo elbow surgery this offseason and surely would have had to take a paycut on the $5.15 million he would have been due in 2010, though that will no longer be necessary. Kerney played in two Pro Bowls and will finish with 82.5 sacks over his 11-year career.

According to Danny O'Neil on Twitter, Patrick Kerney will undergo postseason surgery on his elbow.

Our View:The defensive lineman was hampered by the injury for much of the second half, so the surgery seems like a good idea. The 33-year-old Kerney could miss the start off the team's offseason program and the Seahawks will have to decide if he's worth keeping around for a salary that exceeds $5 million.

Patrick Kerney fully practiced Thursday after being limited yesterday, according to the Seahawks' official website. He is recovering from a groin injury.

Our View:The veteran defensive end is expected to play on Sunday at Dallas. He chipped in four sacks so far, and will be counted on to apply pressure on quarterback Tony Romo.
