Running back Jonathan Stewart (foot) is active for the Week 4 game against the Falcons.

Our View:Fantasy owners should feel free to use Stewart this week.
September 26, 2008
Jonathan Stewart is on the Panthers injury report with a toe issue, but he will play this weekend regardless, according to the Rock Hill Herald.

Our View:This appears to be a great matchup for the Panthers rushing attack given the struggles the Falcons have shown this year stopping anyone from moving the chains on the ground.
September 25, 2008
Jonathan Stewart showed up on the Panthers injury list on Thursday due to a toe injury, according to NFL.com.

Our View:Stewart had surgery in March to help heal a turf toe injury and it looks like it might be flaring up again. There is no news on what his status is for Week 4.
September 23, 2008
Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams are both considered starters by coach John Fox and he indicated they will continue to split carries, according to the Charlotte Observer.

Our View:This is reasonable, but Stewart does deserve to get the ball more. He is averaging 4.7 yards per carry, and has gained one more yard than Williams (145) on eight fewer rushes. He has also punched in three touchdowns while Williams is still held with none. As of now, Stewart should be the preferred back among fantasy owners.
September 21, 2008
Rookie Jonathan Stewart posted seven carries for 16 yards and one touchdown in the Panthers Week 3 loss to Minnesota.

Our View:Stewart, who has scored three touchdowns in the past two games, appears to be the Panthers' primary goal line back. It was tough sledding this week against a tough Vikings run defense, but better days are on the horizon with Atlanta and Kansas City on the schedule during the next two weeks.
September 21, 2008
Rookie Jonathan Stewart exited the game against Minnesota during the third quarter with an undisclosed injury.

Our View:Stewart was injured at the end of a long kickoff return. It initally looked like he had the wind knocked out of him, but he hasn't returned to the game. No further information is currently available.
September 14, 2008
Jonathan Stewart came through for his fantasy owners Sunday, running for 77 yards and a couple TDs on 14 carries (5.5 YPC).

Our View:Stewart easily outplayed DeAngelo Williams, who had 31 yards on 11 totes. He is likely the Carolina back you will want to play going forward.
August 23, 2008
Jonathan Stewart missed the first two preseason games, but he made up for lost time Saturday, gaining an even 100 yards on 10 carries while adding a 50-yard touchdown in the 47-3 thrashing of the Redskins.

Our View:DeAngelo Williams also had a good night, as the duo combined for 201 yards on the ground. It appears that Stewart toe injury is just fine.
August 20, 2008
Jonathan Stewart will see action at running back with the first team during the Panthers preseason game on Thursday, according to CarolinaGrowl.com

Our View:Stewart was still nursing a sore toe and had not been very effective in the preseason. Hopefully he will start to improve, as fantasy owners are expecting him to be a valuable contributor this season.
August 15, 2008
Jonathan Stewart is still recovering from his injured toe and has been sent to visit Dr. Robert Anderson, according to the Gaston Gazette. The doctor assured Stewart that he can’t cause any more damage to the ailing toe and that what he’s feeling is a build up of scar tissue. As time goes on and the more he plays, the scar tissue will loosen up and the toe will begin to feel normal.

Our View:Stewart will take things slow at the beginning of the season, but should now have the confidence to run hard and with less hesitancy after visiting the doctor.
August 14, 2008
Panthers first-round pick Jonathan Stewart is still recovering from his injured toe, and it showed in the team's 24-13 exhibition loss to Philadelphia. Stewart carried the ball four times and gained only three yards total.

Our View:That was an ugly performance by Stewart. He can afford to go to the toe excuse once or twice, but if he is going to play as much as fantasy owners think he will, Stewart will need to step up from here on out.
August 13, 2008
Coach John Fox indicated that rookie Jonathan Stewart may see action in Thursday's preseason contest against Philadelphia, according to the Rock Hill Herald. Stewart was still experiencing some pain in his surgically repaired toe last week.

Our View:Stewart needs to play and cannot afford not to, with only three weeks left to earn a solid role in the Panthers' offense. DeAngelo Williams remains the leader for the starting job.
August 6, 2008
Jonathan Stewart continues to practice on a limited basis, but he admits that he still has some discomfort in his surgically repaired right big toe, according to the Charlotte Observer.

Our View:Stewart was supposed to be ready to practice fully by this point. He is unlikely to play in the preseason opener, though coach John Fox said it would be a game-time decision.
August 3, 2008
Jonathan Stewart continues to be held out of contact drills as the team is hoping more rest will help to ensure that his surgically repaired toe doesn't flare up when the games count, according to the Gaston Gazette.

Our View:With Steve Smith out for two games, the Panthers will likely need to move the chains on the ground early with Stewart being the power and DeAngelo Williams the dash. Williams, for his part, has looked great in camp so far.
July 30, 2008
The Charlotte Observer indicates that Jonathan Stewart is healthy following his toe surgery, and is fully practicing in training camp. He has looked good so far, and coach John Fox said, "He’s had some flashy looking runs ever since the first day. We’re easing him into it and he continues to impress us."

Our View:He is also being featured often as a receiver out of the backfield, and looks to make a favorable impact as a rookie while splitting the workload with DeAngelo Williams.
July 26, 2008
The Panthers and 1st-round draft pick running back Jonathan Stewart have reached terms on a rookie contract, according to according to Charlotte.com.

Our View:Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The Panthers came to terms with their other first-round pick, offensive tackle Jeff Otah, early Friday evening. To make room for Stewart and Otah on the roster, the Panthers released running back Alex Haynes and linebacker Brandon Jamison.
June 24, 2008
Carolina Panthers head coach John Fox expects rookie running back Jonathan Stewart to be ready for training camp, according to USA Today. "He's out of his boot and he's one schedule. He will be coming here shortly and being doing rehab with our medical people and they are telling me he will be ready for July 25 (the start of training camp)."

Our View:Stewart is considered by many to be the most complete running back in the draft, and is expected to push DeAngelo Williams for the starting role in 2008.
June 15, 2008
According to the Carolina Growl, Panthers head coach John Fox is anxious to have rookie running back Jonathan Stewart back at practice. Stewart isn’t allowed around the facility until the University of Oregon finishes its final exams, but he's out of his walking boot and is expected to be ready for training camp. "He’s out of his boot and he’s one schedule. He will be coming here shortly and being doing rehab with our medical people and they are telling me he will be ready for July 25 (the start of training camp).”

Our View:Stewart is expected to work in combination with DeAngelo Williams this year and garner the majority of the first and second down work as well as the short-yardage role with Williams serving as the third down back.
May 28, 2008
Jonathan Stewart has shed the protective boot around his right foot. He underwent turf toe surgery in mid-March but is expected to be ready for training camp, the Charlotte Observer reports.

Our View:The Panthers are already talking about Stewart as a potential starter and kick returner, which seems like a lot for a guy coming off toe surgery. The Stewart-DeAngelo Williams split will be a hot topic this July and August.
May 14, 2008
Jonathan Stewart is in the mix to be the Panthers kick returner in 2008, even though he could also be their No. 1 running back. "Jonathan Stewart was one of the leaders in the country, as well as leading the Pac-10. He's the guy who'll start off with those duties when we go to (training) camp," head coach John Fox tells the Charlotte Observer. "Not only is he an outstanding running back, but that was one of the key factors but in our search for a kickoff returner -- that we were able to address that."

Our View:Guys like Maurice Jones-Drew, Leon Washington, Jerious Norwood, Laurence Maroney (2006), and Michael Turner (2006) have returned kicks in recent seasons, but none of those backs were also asked to carry the ball 20 times per game. We're wondering if Fox is tipping his hand here and suggesting that Stewart is in line to split carries with DeAngelo Williams.
April 28, 2008
Rookie rusher Jonathan Stewart will be ready for the start of training camp despite undergoing recent surgery for turf toe, according to the Charlotte Observer. Stewart said he had surgery on the toe on March 12 and should start doing his rehabilitation within a week. The surgery was done by Panthers doctor Robert Anderson.

Our View:He will share the load with DeAngelo Williams as the Panthers attempt to feature a power running game in 2008. A committee approach could materialize in Carolina, with the starting nod going to the more productive back.
April 26, 2008
The Carolina Panthers selected Oregon running back Jonathan Stewart with the 14th overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Our View:The Panthers want to feature a power running game in 2008, and Stewart provides them with a big punishing back, who can help move the chains. Stewart is dealing with a toe injury, but this pick isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement for DeAngelo Williams. If Stewart is healthy, we expect the Panthers to use a committee approach this season.
April 22, 2008
The Denver Broncos love Oregon running back Jonathan Stewart and they had Illinois running back Rashard Mendenhall in for a visit last week, according to the Denver Post.

Our View:The organization isn’t convinced Travis Henry can walk the straight and narrow, and head coach Mike Shanahan doesn’t think either Selvin Young or Andre Hall are every down backs. However, the Broncos aren’t known for selecting backs in the first round, and both of the previously mentioned players are first round prospects.
March 31, 2008

There are rumblings that Seattle Seahawks president of football operations/general manager Tim Ruskell absolutely loves Oregon running back Jonathan Stewart, according to Pro Football Weekly. The report suggests that Seattle could attempt to trade up from the 1.25 slot to land him. Stewart, who recently underwent toe surgery, is expected to be ready for training camp.
March 13, 2008
NFL prospect Jonathan Stewart has underwent surgery on his big toe and will miss four to six months. He may still have a shot to be ready in time for the start of training camp. This according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network.
March 12, 2008
The NFL Network's Mike Mayock reports that Jonathan Stewart could undergo surgery on his toe that would sideline him for four-to-six months. If the running back does have the procedure, obviously his stock would tumble big time. He was a sure-fire first-round pick before this news.
