| It has been decided that Rafael Furcal will undergo surgery on Thursday to relieve pressure on a disk in his lower back, and he could be out at least eight weeks, according to the AP. He has not been able to recover from a lower back strain and skipper Joe Torre said, "It’s a blow, but it’s reality. He went out there, played a game and that was that. It’s frustrating. He was, from what I understand, ready to just do this and get it done and get it over with. They anticipate this will solve everything."

Our View: Torre will feature Angel Berroa at shortstop, and will also consider Nomar Garciaparra for the spot, when he comes off the DL, possibly before the All-Star break.

GM Neal Huntington said the 24-year-old closer will go on a rehab program for around four weeks, then take another four weeks to get back into pitching shape, and he added, "We’re going through a tough stretch right now. Matt’s a gamer. We know he’s going to be back."

Our View: Capps converted his first 15 save opportunities before blowing one on June 20. That started a rough stretch for the closer, who blew five of his last seven save opportunities. Tyler Yates and Damaso Marte are the top candidates to handle the closer role while Capps is out.
